Today we leave early from our holiday home in Orgiva towards Monachil in the Sierra Nevada in Andalusia in Spain. This gorge walk at Monachil near Granada is one of the most popular hikes in the Sierra Nevada in Spain. We leave after breakfast from Orgiva to Monachil. After about an hour we drive and arrive in Granada. At the beginning of Monachil parking is indicated, but at the intersection where we expect a sign, there's none. We drive on and eventually found the parking lot. The parking lot is located 100 meters after the start of the walk and is not visible from the starting point.

We park the car and start the walk by the Los Cahorros de Monachil. The first part of the walk we walk on a dirt road steeply downhill. If we leave the buildings behind we have to gain the same height again on a steep walk. But once on top we have the first beautiful views of the Los Cahorros de Monachil. There are several circular walks around and into the gorge at Los Cahorros de Monachil. We have planned a walk of 10 kilometers. We descend into the gorge where we encounter many rock climbers. We walk on a long suspension bridge, which Sandra finds quite scary. The footpath by the Los Cahorros de Monachil is narrow and occasionally very low. When rocks extend the walking path, handles placed preventing falling in the water. But sometimes walking through the water is easier. Also, some parts are so low that we have to bend or even crawl underneath the rock. Along the water we find some nice picnic spots and big rocks where we have a break. The nature of the Los Cahorros de Monachil is astonished beautiful and the walk is fun and varied. A large open space is for many the end of the walk. We decide to walk another 100 meters up to Central Electrica de La Vega for more beautiful views of Los Cahorros and the Río Monachil.
On an easy trail we arrive at the farthest point of our walk. We decide not to walk back through the gorge, but to walk back uphill to the other side of Los Cahorros valley. We climb up on a nice trail and walk back down the mountainside to Monachil. The walk provides excellent views over the Los Cahorros de Monachil and Granada. And on a dirt road we walk back to the parking lot outside Monachil.

This walk near Granada in Monachil is one of the most popular hikes in the Sierra Nevada in Spain. We understand very well why every year many hikers walk Los Cahorros de Monachil. The walk is fun, varied and provides beautiful scenery. There are several walking trails through the Los Cahorros de Monachil. There are no restaurant facilities in the gorge, sow bring your own. In summer, this hike is not recommended because of the temperature.
