On a nice Sunday we leave home early to drive to Altenahr in Germany for a walk. After a smooth ride we arrive at 9 am in Altenburg and park our car at the retirement home. Altenburg is located a kilometer from Altenahr.

Our walk starts behind a school where we turn left and walk up hill. Our first resting place is a bench on the top of the Hornberg, which gives an amazing view over the Ahrtal and Altenburg. We walk a bit further through the forest and pass an open field in the hills. We follow the direction of Steinerberghaus. Steinerberghaus is a hotel with a restaurant with a panoramic view over the Ahrtal. Also the big open picknick area has a very nice view over the hilly environment of the Ahr. It is still early in the morning and it is still cloudy, so we drink coffee, hoping the clouds will clear. Unfortunately the clouds don't leave as soon as we wanted en we decided to walk further. At first we take the same way back as we came in. On the crossing we follow the direction to the viewpoint of Schrock. This viewing point had also an amazing view over the valley of the Ahr. We descend to the viewpoint Teufelslei, of Devils Mountain. Arriving at the Teufelslei we can't find the last part of the walking path. The last part looks like climbing and we both don't feel much for climbing, so we leave the Teufelslei and continue our hike. We arrive at an open space in the forest and have a great view over the Burg Are, without any forest in between. This open view has also a great view over the Ahrtal.

We descend to the Ahrtalweg over a winding path. We follow the Ahrtalweg for al long time and see lots of benched during the walk. We see a lot of other walkers, so we're suspecting this to be a favorite Sunday afternoon walk. This part of the circular walk is very flat and it is a wide walking path, so easy to walk the miles away. Fortunately you have very nice views over the Ahr, wine fields, and steep mountainsides around the Ahr along the way.

Just before entering Altenahr we are changing direction to Teufelsloch. We have to climb about 50 meters before arriving to Teufelsloch, but it is worth the climb. The viewpoint of the black cross gives a nice view over Altenahr and the many hotels in the village. From the viewpoint of the Black Cross it isn't far until you reach the Teufelsloch. The Teufelsloch is a big hole in the volcanic stone where a nice viewpoint is added.

From the viewpoint we start descending to Altenburg to our car.
The area of the Ahrtal is covered in uncountable green colors during springtime. We really enjoyed a day's walk in the forest around the Ahr.Along the walk there isn't much opportunity to buy some food; only at hotel Steinerberghaus is an opportunity to buy food en drinks. For the track you will need shoes with good profile. At some points the path is rocky. We really recommend this walk, with we both really enjoy.
