Today we have walked a very popular route that definitely should be on the list when visiting the Vosges in France. We walk from Rothenbach to Hohneck via the Route des Crêtes

We park our car in the morning at the parking lot near Rothenbach. We cross the tarmac road and walk towards a crossing of hiking trails. We take the walking path at the left side in the direction of Le Rainkopf. We walk between meadows and enter a forest quite quickly. We go straight ahead at a crossing. The bench we encounter gives a very nice view of Lac de Blancemer and de peeks of the Vosges in France. On the Bench we enjoy this beautiful part of France. After the beak we head toward a refuge along the walking path on the Route des Crêtes.

At the crossing of walking paths we keep the direction of the GR 531 and take a walk around Le Kastelberg. We walk further en enjoying the nice views and variety of forest and the open spaces. We pick our lunch spot so we have a very nice vies of the Wormsawald. This forest is supposed to be one of the nicest forests in the Vosges, but for entering we have to descent about 100 meters. Since we don't have the time to walk to the Wormsawald, we walk on to the direction of Hohneck. During the walk we have a view of Lac de Schiessrothried and have changing views over forests and peeks of balloons in the Vosges in France. We don't walk all the way to the Auberge of Hohneck, but decide to walk back through the meadows of Le Kastelberg. In the winter these meadows are uses for skiing. The ski lifts and the marks of the piste are a reminder of the ski area of La Bresse.

This part of the walk is along the GR 5 and is relatively flat. We could walk over the Le Rainkopf, but we decide to walk the same way as we did earlier and walk around Le rainkopf. We walk parallel of Route des Crêtes and return to Rothenbach where our car is parked.

This walk has almost no height difference and is relatively easy to walk. We regret that the first 3 kilometers we came across several benches along the hiking path. In between we found no bench at all. Luckily there are some nice places where you can rest and lunch.

Length: 11 km
Height difference: approximate 200 m (climbing and descending)
