From Fataga we drive towards Tejeda via the artists village Artenara to the starting point of the hike to Altavista. It is a good road, but it takes more time than we thought.
The hike to Altavista is worth it for the views. You only need a little perseverance for this hike. In the beginning of the hike there is a fairly steep climb, but when you reach the highest point on this section, the trail goes down again. This repeats on every section of the hike. Because the hike has a fair overall ascent, it's disappointing you keep going down with the next hill in sight.
The trail goes through a pine forest most of the way. There are few places with real shade. The hike is not really suited to be done in the full burning sun.
But when you reach the top, the view is breathtaking! You have great views of Roque Nublo and Roque Bentaiga, the Acusa plain and San Nicolas de Tolentino (fruit harvesters area). It feels like you can see all of Gran Canaria from this point!
There are no restaurants or places you can buy food or water. So if you decide to walk this trail, take enough food and water.
