Early in the morning we leave for a nice walk along the riverside of the Ourthe near Nadrin. The route we have planned to walk goes across the rocks of Le Hérou and along the riverside of the Ourthe and back again through the forest towards Nadrin. Nadrin is a small village in the province of Houffalize, about 10 km from La Roche-en-Ardenne. We stayed in a hotel in La Roche-en-Ardenne.

We park our car on a parking of a (closed) hotel Le Belvedere at the Rue Du Hérou at the border of the village of Nadrin. We park the car under the only tree on the parking and hope that it will stay a bit cool during the walk. It must be a popular walk, because there are several other cars at the parking. We grab our bags and set off for the hike.

We descend very quickly towards the rocks of Le Hérou. Pretty soon after the first stop we have our first beautiful view across the rocks of Le Hérou and the valley of the Ourthe. When we walk a bit further we have a first view of the Ourthe. There are several walking paths over the rocks of Le Hérou. We have followed one of the many walking paths. We try to find a walking path down to the riverside of the Ourthe across the steep rocks of Le Hérou. The walking path we find is by far not the best walking path, but it is better than nothing. There are some ropes along and on the walking path, but it is not maintained. The descending is quite a challenge.

Finally we arrive at the riverside of the Ourthe. The advantage of a walk along the riverside is finding a place for a lunch with a beautiful view is easy. There are enough rocks along the riverside of the Ourthe with make a perfect lunch spot. The first part of the walk along the riverside of the Ourthe is not easy to walk. Parts of the walking path are washed away in the Ourthe and there are several detours toward higher parts of the riverside. After a climb on some rocks, we arrive at a better part of the walking path along the riverside. And as soon as we see some other people in slippers, we assume the walking path will be much better.

The first crossing of walking paths is a short cut back to Nadrin, but we want to walk a bit further, so we walk further along the riverside of the Ourthe. We do leave the riverside of the next crossing of walking paths. We want to walk back to Nadrin though the forest of Nadrin, but it means a walk 150 m uphill. The alternative is less steep, but it means a long walk along the big tarmac road. So we walk slowly uphill and end up at a survival training area. We use some build parts to sit and rest.

We walk further and look for the walking path back to Nadrin. Next to a logged part of the forest is the walking path back to Nadrin. The first part is a bit less visible due to vegetation, but it gets better along the way. We follow the walking path uphill and downhill and arrive back at the parking lot in Nadrin. And we have, thanks to the tree, a cool car!

The walk over the rocks of Le Hérou and along the riverside of the Ourthe near Nadrin is a very beautiful walk. The walk seems easier to walk than it really is. The walking path is not well maintained in some parts. And don't walk the route after rain. Big parts of the walk are over rocks. Therefore you will need good hiking boots during this hike. There are no places where you can buy food and drinks, so you'll have to bring it yourselves.

Length: 8km
High difference: uphill and downhill in total about 400 m
