TURNAGAIN PASS -- A classic weekend avalanche just south of Turnagain Pass buried a local skier five or six feet deep but friends were able to dig her out alive, according to the Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center.

The things I carry nearly always in the wilds of Alaska fit in a watertight Lexan case that measures 5 inches by 3 inches by about half an inch thick. It has been only slightly modified so that it can hang conveniently around my neck no matter what clothing is worn. The case is smaller than the smallest passport pouch and weighs not much more.
